Baranduda Electrical Energy Reserve

Baranduda Electrical Energy Reserve

SEC is investing with Aware Super and Birdwood to deliver the Baranduda Electrical Energy Reserve, a large-scale battery near Wodonga in north-east Victoria.

Located in an existing industrial estate next to the Wodonga Terminal Station, the 400-megawatt battery will provide 1.86 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. Once operational in late 2028, it will be capable of storing enough energy to power more than 200,000 Victorian homes through the evening peak.

The battery will charge when renewable energy is abundant and release electricity when it is needed. This will help strengthen the electricity grid, support more wind and solar generation and put downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices as Victoria’s ageing coal-fired power stations retire.

Under a 15-year agreement, SEC will secure half of the battery’s output to support its Victorian Government and commercial energy retail contracts.

Construction is expected to begin in November 2026 and create around 150 jobs, including opportunities for trainees, apprentices and cadets. Local suppliers and First Peoples will also have opportunities to participate in the project.

Community Benefit Fund

Once it enters commercial operation, the project will contribute $100,000 each year to a community benefit fund supporting local initiatives. More information about the fund will be shared as the project progresses.
